Kotor Tickets and Prices: City Walls, Cable Car and City Pass

Updated:

The city wall of Kotor along the Škurda river, with green water and a mountain slope behind

In Kotor you do not pay to enter the old town. You pay for the town walls with St John’s Fortress (15 euros according to the latest municipal notice, dated 28 February 2025), for the cable car (20 euros return, 12 one way, at the fares we read on 23 October 2026) and for the museums. The Kotor City Pass costs 19 euros (S) or 30 euros (M) and does not include the walls. We read the official sources on 23 October 2026. Prices and hours change, so check them again before you go. We are an independent guide: we do not sell any of the official tickets below.

Town walls and St John’s Fortress: 15 euros

The 15 euros is the fee for the walls and the fortress, not an entrance fee for the town. The municipality collects it from 1 March to 30 November, at two ticket points: Parilo, behind the church of St Mary Koleđata, and Škaljarska pjaca. Hours in the 2025 notice: 8:00 to 18:00 in March and April, 7:00 to 20:00 from May to September, 8:00 to 17:00 in October and November. The notice says nothing about December, January and February, and gives no last-entry time.

We found no online ticket for the walls. We found no statement on paying by card at the ticket points, so bring some cash. Buy only at the municipality’s ticket points: according to local press, in 2025 the tourist organisation of Kotor warned about people selling tickets without permission near Parilo and Škaljarska pjaca.

It is not clear who is exempt. The 2025 notice lists only people with registered residence in Montenegro. The 2024 communiqué also lists children up to 12, people with disabilities and visitors on religious feast days, according to the calendar of the Diocese of Kotor. Ask at the ticket office. See also the opening hours page. The notice is on the municipality’s website.

Cable car

The cable car goes from a lower station just outside Kotor to an upper station on the Lovćen mountain. The ride takes 11 minutes. At the end-of-season hours we read, it runs from 9:00 to 19:00 every day, but on Tuesdays only from 10:30; the last ascent is at 18:30 and the last descent at 19:00. The fares and hours change with the season. In strong wind or storms the service can stop, and the operator advises checking its website and social channels before you go. Its page says that buying online avoids the queue and gives a discount on some tickets. The shop is shop.kotorcablecar.com. Animals are allowed only in dedicated cabins and with the consent of the other passengers.

We did not confirm whether a path leads from the upper station to the Njegoš Mausoleum, so we do not say that the cable car takes you there.

City Pass: S and M

The Kotor City Pass is sold by the tourist organisation of Kotor. It is valid for one visit to each site, within 30 days of purchase. The churches cannot be visited during services.

The town walls are not on either list. The aquarium is in Dobrota, about 1.6 km north of the Sea Gate by a walking estimate, outside the old town. The museums of Kotor also sell their own combined tickets: five sites for 15 euros, Perast and Risan together for 12.

Small charges you may meet

The tourist tax is 1 euro per person per night (ages 12 to 18: 0.50, under 12: free). It is collected with the bill by your accommodation. The excursion tax of 1 euro per person applies only to visitors in an organised group with an agency or another registered operator, and the organiser pays it, not the single visitor.

Do I need a ticket to enter the old town of Kotor?

No. The old town is public space. You pay for the town walls and St John’s Fortress (15 euros according to the latest municipal notice, 28 February 2025), for the cable car and for the museums.

Does the Kotor City Pass include the walls?

No. The walls are not in the list of sites of either pass. The City Pass S costs 19 euros and the City Pass M 30 euros, and each site can be visited once within 30 days.

How much are the cathedral and the Maritime Museum?

We could not confirm it. We found no official source with a current price for the Cathedral of St Tryphon, and the only price we found for the Maritime Museum is from a 2023 copy of its website. Both are included in the City Pass.
